How do you play the name game?

If I had had a boy, he would have been named Aidan. I had a girl, though, and named her Emma. If I had known that Emma and Aidan were the top baby names on just about any list in 2006, would I still have chosen them? Yes.

Some people use hot baby names lists to help them choose a name, while others use them to determine what names to avoid. Many use the lists — provided here by three different sources — as a sort-of litmus test to determine what they do and don’t like.

Choosing a name obviously is a very personal decision. Do you use a family name, a maiden name, a celebrity name or a unique construction? Do you put emphasis on how it sounds or how it looks when written? Do you use alliteration or prefer a certain rhythmic pattern? Do you consider how the name sounds when used with the siblings’ names?

All can be ways to determine your new baby’s name.

And despite the haggling and the hem-hawing that can come with choosing a name, you just might not know the appropriate moniker until you see your baby for the first time.

But without further ado, here are the most recent lists of the top baby names.
