A new book gives parents a hand instilling values of helpfulness, kindness and generosity in their children.
"Meet Genna & Russ, The Generous Kids" by Sarah Wilson is the first in a series and includes a CD with six children's songs, such as "Giving Makes Your Heart Smile" and "It's Cool to Care."
In the book, iluustrated by Terry Taylor, Genna and Russ are seen in various settings doing the right thing. A variety of not-so-nice behaviors also are presented, and I know my 3-1/2-year-old daughter could relate to those pages most, and she seemed to grasp the meaning at the end of the story when Genna and Russ were surrounded by friends because of their kindness.
The book even includes adult and child comprehension activities at the end, if the connections aren't hitting home.
While sharing, being kind and tolerant, and putting others first are characteristics picked up mostly through watching parents and other family members, this book might be most useful in daycare or school settings, or by foster or adoptive parents.
A portion of the proceeds of any Generous Kids product will go to a children's charity. For information, visit www.GennaRussKids.com.
