Stamp Out Hunger Drive Set

May 8, 2012
By Scott McCloskey - Staff Writer , The Intelligencer/Wheeling News-Register

Wheeling residents will have the opportunity to help those who don't know where their next meal is coming from during the 20th annual National Association of Letter Carriers "Stamp Out Hunger" food drive, scheduled for Saturday.

Wheeling residents can assist the food drive by simply putting out a non-perishable food donation in a sturdy bag, preferably a plastic bag, next to their mailbox on Saturday. On that day local letter carriers, with the help of rural carriers and the Carpenter's Union, will collect the donations and deliver them to the Catholic Neighborhood Center on 18th Street. They will then divided among 16 local charities.

The NALC's effort is the nation's largest single-day food drive, with letter carriers across the country having collected more than 1.1 billion pounds of food since its inception in 1993. Last year, letter carriers across America collected 70.2 million pounds of food.

Leave canned and dry goods by your mailbox on Saturday, May 12 before your letter carrier comes. He or she will collect the items for the annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive.

According to the NALC, 16 percent of all Americans are at risk of hunger. This includes one in five children under the age of 18, plus 4 million seniors who are forced every day to choose between paying for a utility bill, medicine or buying food. Also, food banks and pantries suggest that late spring is the best time for the food drive, since most donations are received at Thanksgiving and Christmas.
