Well, thank you Mother Nature. Your sizzling summer heat is upon us! Parents, think for a moment how we wished for summer when we had icy roads, zero temperatures and school delays? Now, as the temperature rises, the outside people are perspiring and slathering on sunscreen while the insiders crank up the air conditioning. Once again the family grumbles. This time it is humidity, mosquitoes and relentless heat.

Bye bye sleds and hot chocolate. 'Tis the season for swimming and lemonade; great panaceas for a heat-weary family. Why not put the squeeze on summer heat with homemade lemonade, limeade, orangeade or a combination fruitade?

Keep a batch of "simple syrup" in the refrigerator. This is a base for many refreshing fresh fruit drinks.

To make 1 1/2 cups simple syrup: Combine 1 cup granulated sugar and 1 cup water in a saucepan. Bring to a boil and stir as the sugar dissolves. Chill. You can double or triple the syrup recipe.

In a large pitcher combine 1 1/2 cups syrup and 1 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice. Add 5-6 cups water to dilute. Pour into ice filled glasses.

Strawberry Lemonade

Prepare Lemonade. Combine 8 chopped strawberries, 2 tablespoons sugar and 1 cup of water in blender. Stir into the lemonade pitcher.

Combine 1 1/2 cups freshly squeezed orange juice, 1/3 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice with 1 1/2 cups simple syrup. Add 5-6 cups of water to taste. Freeze any leftover "ade" in ice cube trays.

Combine 2 cups freshly squeezed lime juice with 1 1/2 cups simple syrup. Add 1 liter of club soda.

So who does all the squeezing? The kids! It might be a sticky situation, but it's all for the greater good. They are in the kitchen engaged in a family activity. With a supply of syrup in the refrigerator, they can make fruitade by the glass.

Without a daily sense of accomplishment, summer brains grow lazy. By the end of a hot day, everyone is eligible for the prickly award. Sitting around sipping lemonade is an occasion that begs for silly games.
