Summer Activities and Tot Trot

May 7, 2018

It's good to be a kid - and a parent - in the Ohio Valley!

More and more local businesses are focusing on serving and entertaining kids here in the Ohio Valley than I can ever remember. Moms and dads, we are spoiled for choice. There, of course, are the mainstays:?the Children's Museum of the Ohio Valley, Oglebay Good Zoo, Oglebay Institute Schrader Environmental Education?Center, Oglebay Park, Wheeling Park, Grand Vue Park, Kruger Street Toy & Train Museum, Toy and Plastic Brick Museum, free science demos at SMART Centre Market, the YMCA, local playgrounds and local library programming, to name just a few.

New to the valley are the Tilt Studio at the Ohio Valley Mall, Tripp Fun Zone at Elm Terrace Shopping Center, Tootsie's Play?Center in Warwood, Fulton Fun Factory, and the Imagination Station MAKE Shop in Moundsville. All of these places offer special events and birthday packages, too! Check out our Summer Survival Guide that comes out later this month for more ideas and an updated summer camp list.

Speaking of activities, don't forget the Ogden Tiny Tot Trot and Fun Run on May 26 in downtown Wheeling. OV Parent sponsors these non-competitive kids' races that are part of the enormous and prestigious Ogden Newspapers Half-Marathon Classic and 5K run/walk. The Fun Run for kids 12 and under starts at 8:20 a.m. and is a one-mile course around downtown. Registration is $15. Parents can run with their kids for free or pay $15 and get a T-shirt.

The Tiny?Tot Trot is a free, 100-yard dash along Water Street for kids 5 and under. We break the race into two heats: 4- and 5-year-olds go first, then 3 and unders. T-shirts are $5 while supplies last. Each Tot Trotter gets a goody bag of items from our sponsors. Plus, there will be activities along Water Street provided by our community partners! It's a fun way to spend the morning, and it happens rain or shine. In the 12 years I've been organizing it, we've had everything from windy and 50 degrees to rip-roaring downpours to a hot-and-sweaty 85 and sunny. We're there, no matter what.

You can register for both events online through May 14, at www.ogdenhalfmarathonclassic.com. Once online registration closes, you can still register in person at the newspaper office, 1500 Main St., Wheeling, and from noon to 6 p.m. Friday, May 25, at River City Restaurant, 14th and Main streets. Registration on the day of the race is from 6-8 a.m. for the Fun Run and 7:30-8:45 a.m. for the Tot Trot.

See you there!
